We travel all of North Carolina talking to fire and storm victims, and each Family has a story to tell regarding their loss. After spending as much time as we have discussing the claims process we can't help but notice patterns forming as to how insurance companies settle their claims.
We have found ourselves trying to educate people as to why they should not hire anyone, especially a restoration company. We have nothing against any of these companies but you need to understand something very important… If you hire a restoration company, most all of the money from your policy will go to them, instead of you.
This has been going on for years. We believe since you bought the policy, you should receive the settlement. In short, we advise everyone to settle the claim first… After you have settled and you know the budget you have to work with, obtain bids from 3 different contractors.
This information will help you to avoid running out of money to repair or rebuild your home. It is impossible for us to know of every major loss but we want to inform you of what you should do and not do after your loss from a fire or storm victims point of view.
• Protect the property from further damage, tarp any holes in the roof and board up windows if necessary.
• Don't hire a dry cleaners company to remove smoke damage, smoke damage is covered no differently than fire or water damage.
• If you do please understand you're paying someone from your policy and wasting your money.
• Use a note pad and take notes and keep everyone away from your property.
• Do not hire a fire restoration company unless you want most all of your settlement to be paid to them.
• Don't throw anything away and do not let anyone else do it either, leave it in the house.
• Get educated: Google Anderson Cooper/Allstate and watch the video.
• This will help to explain what you're up against. This is not the time to make rash decisions. Slow down, the damage is done and become educated about this process.
• If you do not have a copy of your policy, request one from the adjuster. Do not be surprised if you never receive a copy.
• After you have removed all important documents and any jewelry, leave everything else inside the home and lock it up. It's this simple.
